Today’s TOMCAR is the product of more than three decades of engineering expertise. It began life as the solution to a military need for an off-road vehicle that was smaller than a conventional sport utility vehicle yet faster, safer and more nimble than other ATVs on the market. The vehicle had to be agile enough to scale stony hillsides, tall enough to float over rocks and debris, simple to drive and durable enough to stand up to brutal climates.

TOMCAR met these challenges and more with a unique design that combines the most desirable attributes of a go-anywhere vehicle; short wheel base, long suspension travel, a low center of gravity and high ground clearance.

Now hand assembled in America with the highest quality materials, TOMCAR brings to commercial and recreational buyers the only vehicle of its type that is engineered to military specifications, designed to last and simple to drive.

Frame and Skid Plate

Among TOMCAR’s many outstanding engineering features is a frame made of oversized, high-grade steel, fully welded to create an armored cocoon that can protect occupants from injury. The flat, single-piece skid plate protects the vehicle’s entire underside from rocks and stumps. The plate is made of aircraft-grade aluminum because unlike steel the material tends to ‘slide’ over obstacles.

Gasoline and Diesel Engines

TOMCAR is equipped with a 4 cylinder, rear-mounted gasoline or diesel engine. The fuel injected 1.0-liter gasoline engine or naturally aspirated 1.4-liter diesel engine, both liquid cooled, deliver more horsepower and low-end torque than most ATVs which use single-cylinder engines or V-twin motorcycle-derived engines. As well as being more muscular, TOMCAR's powertrains have superior thermal management properties and are extremely dependable.

CVT Transmission and Locking Differential

The drivetrain utilizes a Continuously Variable Transmission, (CVT). It is a completely sealed unit but with the drive belt exposed. This means that unlike other ATVs, TOMCAR’s CVT unit runs cooler and the belt can be easily replaced in the field without tools.

The transmission controls include two shift levers, one for selecting high, low or reverse gears or engaging a true neutral, and the other for locking or unlocking the Posi-differential, which can be done on the move.


TOMCAR’s suspension is fully independent front and rear with dual coil, infinitely adjustable hydraulic shocks. In front, the extra heavy-duty suspension mounts carry steel double A-arms that are designed to bend rather than break under excessive impact, so that the vehicle can still be driven home for repairs. At the rear, large swing arms provide 13.0 inches of wheel travel and are paired with shocks that feature a frame mounted accumulator that keeps shock temperatures under control, minimizing shock fade under stressful terrain. TOMCAR offers an accumulator direct from the factory, a feature normally available in high-cost aftermarket suspension kits.

Rear Swing Arms

The rear swing arms contain double roller chains in an oil bath encased in armored steel which transmit engine power to the rear wheels. With conventional drivetrains, a vehicle squats at the back during acceleration. But with TOMCAR, the torque forces the swing arms downward, lifting the rear of the vehicle which allows the TOMCAR to maintain its class leading ground clearance even under load.

Two-Wheel Drive

TOMCAR was engineered as a rear-wheel drive vehicle for several compelling reasons. Four-wheel drive vehicles need to slow down to make aggressive turns or to protect their differentials and front axles in difficult terrain. That means slow crawling and climbing. For TOMCAR, it’s just the opposite. The vehicle is engineered with the engine and most of the other heavy components at the rear. Combined with a light front end, this rear weight bias gives TOMCAR excellent traction in most conditions, while allowing higher speeds than current alternatives.


TOMCAR is designed to be simple and safe to drive. The vehicle controls are straightforward and arranged in an automotive style. This makes TOMCAR easy to master for even a novice driver. Safety features include sliding bucket seats, racing style four- point harnesses, a tilt steering column, automotive safety glass windshield with wipers and washers and the only completely welded frame in the industry. With its armor re-enforced front end and drive system, long suspension travel and low center of gravity, TOMCAR’s design reduces the likelihood of vehicle damage and injury to occupants in the event of an accident.

Ease of Maintenance

TOMCAR uses interchangeable parts and left to right parts symmetry making maintenance quick and easy. For example, the front suspension shocks are interchangeable with the rear shocks with the very same shaft length. This means drivers must only carry one spare shock if any of the four need replacement during a long trek. Replacing a drive belt takes just 30 seconds without the need for any tools. Easier maintenance means fleet operators need to keep minimal parts in stock, lowering the cost of overhead. Most wear components are also adjustable to compensate for wear, extending the intervals between replacements.
